Gravity-Based Impactors for Energy Absorption Testing

Energy Absorption Impact Test Rig (EAITR)

The Energy Absorption Impact Test Rig (EAITR) is a precision-engineered testing system developed for evaluating energy absorption and structural integrity during low-speed impact scenarios. Utilizing a gravity-based propulsion mechanism, this advanced test rig delivers highly repeatable results and is ideal for verifying compliance with international safety standards such as ECE-R42, GB17354-1998, FMVSS Part 581, and CMVSS 215.

Unlike traditional systems driven by complex mechanics or pneumatics, the EAITR employs a gravity-based impactor, which ensures exceptional accuracy and reliability in velocity and energy delivery. The system can handle impact velocities up to 15 km/h, with test masses ranging from 500 kg to 3500 kg, enabling it to replicate a broad spectrum of real-world collision scenarios. The test rig can generate up to 13,500 joules of impact energy and supports a maximum penetration distance of 400 mm.

A key feature of the EAITR is its integrated control software, which automates the test sequence. It includes real-time calculations of the release height based on the desired impact speed, ensuring precision with minimal user input. This not only improves test consistency but also enhances operational efficiency by reducing setup time.

The rig also includes a braking mechanism to prevent secondary impacts, a crucial aspect for safeguarding test specimens and ensuring accurate data collection. Additionally, an integrated speed measurement system validates impact velocity, supporting reliable and traceable test reporting.

The EAITR is a flexible solution—custom configurations can be requested to meet specific customer requirements, including adjustments to mass, speed, or energy levels. Ideal for both R&D and certification environments, this system provides an excellent platform for testing bumpers, energy absorbers, and other vehicle components subject to low-speed impacts.
